Perodua, Daihatsu and Akashi-Kikai to establish automatic transmission manufacturing plant in Seremban

Sometime last year Perodua revealed plans to manufacture E-AT automatic transmissions in Malaysia. Now Daihatsu Motor Co Ltd has released more details on the timeline and structure of the new company that will undertake the E-AT automatic transmission manufacturing in Malaysia.

The new company Akashi-Kikai Malaysia Sdn Bhd will operate it’s 13,000 square metre plant on a 113,000 square metre plot of land in the Sendayan Industrial Park in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.

The plant is expected to be ready in November 2013 and will have a production capacity of 150,000 units a year. The stakeholders will put in RM100 million as capital, and the new company is expected to employ approximately 120 people.

Perodua will own approximately 10% of Akashi-Kikai Malaysia, while Daihatsu Motor Co will hold 39% and Akashi-Kikai Industry Co Ltd of Japan holds a 51% majority. Akashi-Kikai Industry Co Ltd is a subsidiary of Daihatsu and currently makes automatic and CVT transmissions for Daihatsu.

Proton and Yes ’4G Internet car’ collaboration announced

The Yes 4G Proton Inspira that was finally unveiled earlier today at Lot 10, Bukit Bintang, may be a one-off example, but you can expect more in the way of Internet connectivity in Protons in the coming future.

At the unveiling ceremony, the national carmaker and Yes also announced a collaboration to offer Malaysia’s first 4G Internet cars, in which high-speed mobile 4G connectivity is set to be a standard feature in future new Proton models.

The first mass market model to offer this feature as standard will be Proton’s soon-to-be launched P3-21A sedan, which will enjoy Yes as a new value-added item – though no mention was made, the device will presumably come in the form of the existing Huddle unit. No word about pricing or other technical details, but these should be answered at point of launch.

The addition of course will allow Proton cars to tap into the Yes 4G mobile internet network, which currently covers over 65% of the country’s populated areas, with full connectivity across the entire 960 km stretch of the North-South Expressway as well as a large portion of the East-Coast Expressway.

Up to five mobile devices can be connected to the car’s micro-wireless network at any one time, providing high-speed internet access to users. In the future, Proton and Yes aim to enable drivers with smart applications such as remote real-time vehicle diagnostics, security and location-based services that will make the driving experience a safer, more convenient and enjoyable one.

Speaking at the event, Proton MD Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin said the initiative has been designed with the intention of offering Proton customers speed, mobility, convenience and greater productivity while on the road.

“The role of the automobile is diversifying and changing rapidly. It is no longer viewed solely for mobility purposes, but is evolving into an extension of an individual’s social and business circle. A fast wireless 4G connection in the car keeps you connected to this circle, whatever your location may be,” he said.

“It’s not just about having the car 4G-empowered. We are now working to embed this technology into future Proton models. And this initiative is certainly in-line with our brand promise of being ‘Commited To Be Better, as we are constantly seeking ways to enhance the ownership experience of a Proton car,” he added.

Meanwhile, YTL Communications executive director Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong applauded Proton for having the foresight to provide 4G connectivity to its customers. “In today’s world, high-speed mobile connectivity is just as essential as music players and air conditioning in automobiles. We are very excited to embark on the journey of making this vision a reality with Proton,” Yeoh said.

The one-off special edition Yes 4G internet-enabled Proton Inspira of course marks the strategic collaboration, and it’s the grand prize in an online contest on Facebook, which runs until March 27. Click here to join the contest.

Ford Ranger breaks cover at roadshow – estimated pricing revealed, RM98k for 2.2L XLT, RM115k for 3.2L Wildtrak

Well, photos of the vehicle sans disguise may have come about yesterday, but so much for that. The new Ford Ranger has finally broken cover, and is on display at a roadshow in Sunway Pyramid, which runs from today until Sunday. Having been told it was there, yours truly was planning to make a visit to the roadshow tonight or tomorrow morning to grab some pix of the pickup.

Thankfully, there’s no need to wait any further. Diligent reader Rizal M was at the Pyramid this morning, saw the roadshow display and noticed the truck, or trucks in this case. The 3.2 litre variant seen in the earlier post is on show, as is what should be the 2.2 litre XLT manual, presumably so because it’s dressed up as a mobile billboard for the Malaysia Ranger Challenge, which has a manual 2.2 as the winning prize.

More importantly, Rizal snapped a pix of the Ranger product leaflet, in which the estimated pricing for the variants are listed. The 2.2L XLT automatic has an estimated OTR price of RM98,000, while the manual version is expected to be RM92,000. Significantly, there’s also mention of the 3.2L Wildtrak, priced at an estimated RM115,000, so that one looks to be on the cards.

There’s also a shot of what you can expect to find in the T6′s cabin – rain and speed sensing wipers, auto headlamps, cruise control, dual airbags, Bluetooth with Voice Control feature, an integrated control panel, no less than 23 storage spaces dotting the interior and a large lockable glovebox. Supposedly, the compartment is big enough to house a 16-inch laptop, so the brochure goes. The Wildtrak gets dual-zone climate control, as far as can be figured.

Many thanks for taking and sharing the photos, Rizal.

Proton offering step-up financing plan for Proton Saga

Proton is currently offering a step-up financing plan with Maybank and AmBank for the Proton Saga to make it easier for someone to pay for the car the first few years of servicing the loan. This step-up plan is on offer until the 15th March 2012.

The step-up plan is basically a 9 year 90% loan with 3.5% flat per-annum interest which starts you off with a lower than usual monthly repayment, which then increases to a higher amount from the 3rd year onwards, and then up again during the 7th, 8th, and 9th years.

Here’s a sample of the repayment amounts:

One caveat though – Sagas purchased under the step up financing scheme will only have a 3 year manufacturer warranty instead of the 5 year Extended Warranty Programme that Proton Sagas usually come with if you opt for standard financing.

Might be tempting – but 9 year loans should be treated as a last resort if you want to buy a car.

My Proton Makeover – Iswara goes back to Norzamzarini

The third car to undergo a complete refurbishment in the My Proton Makeover programme has gone back to its owner. Engineer Norzamzarini Mohd Bajuri received his R3-rebuilt 1996 Proton Iswara Aeroback at a simple handing over ceremony at the Proton Centre of Excellence yesterday.

The red, second-hand Iswara AB 1.3 that Norzamzarini purchased in 1998 received the full R3 treatment, though the ideas that went into the reworking of the car, as explained by R3 head honcho Tengku Djan Ley, was to ensure its practicality without compromising its external looks.

“As it is the primary mode of transport for Norzamzarini and his family, the car clocked high mileage with its daily use. Knowing that the consistency of its usage will continue, the work that was done to the car’s performance was not so much as to give it more power but to improve its drivability and efficiency,” Djan explained.

“Norzamzarini mentioned that he liked the colour orange. We then explored that option and decided to do the car up in Lotus orange,” he added. The colour was first seen in photos through work-in-progress stories run earlier.

“There was a slight fear that this could potentially make his car look a little tacky. However, the decision to use a significant amount of titanium-coloured detailing helped us avoid that and ultimately gives the car a uniquely classy and sporty look,” he explained. The car also sports a dark interior with strong hints of Lotus orange, fittingly complementing its exterior.

Mechanically, the engine and the gearbox were given a full overhaul, while the suspension system received special attention – it was adjusted to give Norzamzarini’s car a standard feel whilst looking sporty, with an emphasis to provide a balanced performance for day-to-day driving.

“We also opted to use 15-inch rims to improve and sustain the car’s balance, so that it will not result in high fuel consumption,” Djan added.

Meanwhile, Norzamzarini was pretty chuffed with the results. “This new lease of life that Proton has given to my car is a gift beyond words and is truly a blessing to me and my family,” the software from Muar enthused.

The Iswara AB joins Sashideran Radha Krishnan’s 17-year-old Wira and Fadly Hisham Roplay’s 1992 Saga as the R3 makeover specials. Next on the cards is a Satria GTI belonging to Salina Hisham from Johor Bahru.

Peugeot 408 – car goes completely clean in new shots

When sightings become a regular scene and image contributions start pouring in, raining down a bit like bricks, you know something’s about to happen, like a market introduction perhaps.

Such is the case with the Peugeot 408 Turbo – no official indication as to when the car is to be introduced, but the recent sightings cannot be mere coincidence, so expect something on the cards soon. The upcoming C-segment sedan has been seen on at least three occasions, twice wearing tape around the tail lights (in Melaka and in Kulim, Kedah) and once on a trailer here in the Klang Valley.

Now, reader Andrew Ng has sent in a set of – quite literally – back alley shots, in which the Pug can be seen in its entirety, completely uncovered from tip to toe. The choice of location might not be a select one, but at least the photos give the most complete view (especially the front) of how the 408 shapes up. Thanks for the photos, Andrew.

As mentioned previously, the Turbo suffix indicates that the car will wear a 1.6 turbocharged Prince mill under the hood. The car is expected to slot into the hole previously occupied by the 407, now that the 508 has taken its presentation up the ladder chain.

New Ford Ranger seen again, this time without disguise!

Looks like the covers – and camouflage – have come off the new Ford Ranger. The last time the truck was spotted by Danny, it was covered with what looks like a complete sticker job bearing black and white swirl patterns.

Now, new photos have come about of the pickup, sans disguise. Reader Ariff saw the truck sitting in a carpark in Shah Alam, and noticed it because of the distinct rear end, and also because there were no plates on it.

The vehicle in the photos is a 3.2 litre variant, which wears the five-cylinder diesel mill of said displacement – numbers for this one are 200 PS and 470 Nm of torque. As we’re aware of, the T6 Ranger will arrive here initially – sometime in the second quarter of the year – wearing the other diesel mill on offer, the 150 PS and 375 Nm 2.2 litre four-cylinder.

The 3.2 litre variant hasn’t actually been confirmed for Malaysia, but it looks like the XLT example seen here is being sampled, adding fuel to the speculation that the version will eventually make it here, perhaps in Wildtrak form! Tip of the hat to Ariff for the pix.

Locally assembled Peugeot 408 – interior view spied!

Reader Nazmier Amzar managed to snap some spyshots of the new Peugeot 408 under test around Taman Selasih in Kulim, Kedah. I suppose he got chummy with the test car drivers as he managed a shot of the interior, which is pretty much similiar to the 308, including the nice white dials.

Earlier we saw a spyshot of a completely undisguised 408 loaded on a truck – the badging on the rear said 408 Turbo, which indicated that it had the 1.6 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder Prince engine under its hood. Nasim might introduce the 408 Turbo as the high end model, with another normally aspirated 2.0 liter model slotted underneath it.

Facelifted Toyota Prius is here – RM139,900 to RM145,500

We didn’t tell you, but yesterday’s launch of the Toyota Prius c was in fact a double launch – the other car being the facelifted and upgraded third-generation Prius. After focusing on the undoubted star of the show, here’s a look at the Prius that paved the way.

There are no mechanical changes, so big bro Prius continues with the Hybrid Synergy Drive system consisting of a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FXE Atkinson cycle engine (99 PS and 142 Nm) and a 82 PS/207 Nm electric motor. The combined output is 136 PS. There’s an electric water pump, exhaust gas recirculation and no accessory drive belts for max efficiency. The gearbox is a CVT unit. Drivers get to choose between Normal, Power, Eco and EV modes.

No big changes to the trademark Prius look, but small differences include a restyled lower grille (improves air intake, pedestrian protection), repositioned fog lamps, LED daytime running lights, new rear lights and a new Bordeaux Mica Metallic colour. Inside, the theme has been changed from grey to black, and there are new textures to the plastics. The front armrest and cupholders, among other small bits, have been redesigned for better usability.

There’s a Head-Up Display that projects speed and the Hybrid Eco Monitor, and the brightness is auto adjusted. You’ll also notice a new head unit with a 6.1-inch touch screen display, Bluetooth/USB connection and reverse camera. Sound comes from an 8-Green Edge speaker, 8-channel amplifier system by JBL.

Like before, keyless entry and start, cruise control and Touch Tracer are available. On the safety front, the Prius comes with seven airbags, TRC, VSC, ABS, EBD and Brake Assist.

Toyota has a new variant called Prius Luxury. This upscale trim level adds on LED projector headlamps with auto leveling and washer. Normally found on high end Lexus models, LED headlamps are brighter and use less energy than HID bulbs. Luxury trim also brings an electro chromic rear view mirror and leather seats. The front seats are heated.

If you’re wondering why, remember that a small market like ours can’t dictate and custom order specs – I’m guessing that if UMWT wanted leather from TMC, they have to take it with the warmers.

Japan’s best selling car is priced at RM139,900 OTR with insurance, while the Prius Luxury is yours for RM145,500, lower than pre launch estimates.
